The topic “Know Your Place: Concepts of Home and Identity in the Central Valley” brings forward the very important priority of including local content and context that can give our students a more tangible and personal connection to our course content. However, this can be a daunting task in Art and Humanities survey course, in which our area can only be introduced toward the end of the survey. This curricular unit builds on the discussions of how one defines “Place”, and what it means to be defined from the perspective of the center as the periphery led by Dr. Tuedio, Dr. Hatton, and Dr. Mo in the seminar “The Search for Common Ground: Culture in California’s Central Valley.”
